Physical Theatre
This scheme of work and 6 lesson plans are designed to introduce students to the concept of physical theatre.
The scheme encourages students to explore the use of narration, physicality and physical theatre, with various physical activities.
Included are 2 PowerPoints an information sheet which highlights the levels of tension within a character and also 2 scripts included as suggestions for narration to use alongside the physical activities.
Each lesson in this 6 lesson plan also includes a full break down of practical exercises and activities, to aid their students learning.

Lesson Objectives & Activities:
Lesson 1: To introduce the role of Physical Theatre to Students and develop how actors use movement, gesture and body language to communicate their status to an audience. Activities - Warm-up Introduction of the role of Physical Theatre Introduction of the 7 levels of tension. Forum theatre using levels of tension.
Lesson 2: To develop understanding of the term Body Language and how we use movement, gesture, facial expressions and stance to communicate a character's emotion. Activities - Warm-up Status still images Further forum theatre exercise leading to paired improvisation firstly using only sound and then narrative.
Lesson 3: To introduce the term Gestus and how it relates to an actor’s body language. To introduce a short story for physical performance. Activities - Warm-up Voice exercise using nursery rhyme. Gestus still images, Introduction of short story.
Lesson 4: To work in a group and successfully convey their short story through performance. Activities - Warm up Freezes and machines. Rehearsal of their short story. Performance of short story.
Lesson 5: To introduce a narrative song for performance. To rehearse for performance. Activities - Become familiar with their song. Thinking about the use of pace, pause, tension and Gestus. Rehearse their performance.
Lesson 6: To perform a piece of physical theatre. To critically evaluate the work seen. To feedback work seen. Activities - All groups to perform their performances. Teacher to assess level of individual performance.
