Performance from poetry
This scheme of work and 6 lesson plans are designed to introduce students to the different performance devices and explorative strategies, that can be used in devised work.
The scheme encourages students to analyse character through exploratory methods, such as in role writing, hot-seating and tableau to successfully present the characters analysed in a poem.
Each lesson in this 6 lesson plan also includes a full break down of practical exercises and activities and links to the poem ‘Timothy Winters, by Charles Causley, as their stimulus, to aid students learning.

Lesson Objectives & Activities:
Lesson 1: To analyse a character through the use of poem To devise a tableau to show characterisation. Activities - Warm-up freezes Response to poem Tableau of characters, thought track of characters.
Lesson 2: To create a piece of In Role Writing. To perform the In Role Writing. Activities - Warm-up Listen to ‘The Timothy Winters poem’ Create a piece of in role writing to express the character they have chosen.
Lesson 3: To take part in hot seating. To plan their extended role play. Activities - Warm-up Hot-seating exercise to gain further insight into the characters in the poem. Introduce the extended role play and the characters needed. Think about space and whether it is formal or informal.
Lesson 4: To start to plan their extended role play. Activities - Warm-up Planning of extended role play. Rehearsal of extended role play.
Lesson 5: To continue to plan and rehearse their performance for assessment. Activities - Warm-up Group rehearsal of extended role play.
Lesson 6: To perform their extended role play for assessment. Activities - Warm-up Performance of scenes to peers. Peer evaluation and teacher assessment.
