Mime & Melodrama

This scheme of work and 6 lesson plans explores the genre of Melodrama, starting with the silent movie. By the end of the topic, students have performed a scene in 3’s in the style of melodrama, concentrating on physical elements and vocalisation.
The scheme encourages students to explore Physical comedy,
Stock characters, Tableau and Narration, whilst concentrating on creating and presenting a character, as well as exploring the use of script, scenario and contextual information.
Each lesson in this 6-lesson plan also includes a full break down of practical exercises and activities as well as 2 scripts and links to online video resources, to aid students learning.

    Lesson Objectives & Activities:

     

    Lesson 1: To establish what melodrama is and the stock characters it involves. Activities - Teacher introduction Team building activities Warm-up freezes Exaggeration Tableau of characters.

     

    Lesson 2: To create a rehearsed improvisation using narration and tableau. Activities -  Warm-up Listen to ‘The melodrama story’ Plan and start to rehearse tableau and narration.

     

    Lesson 3: To perform their tableau and narration. To plan a simple silent melodrama. Activities - Warm-up Performance of tableau and narration Start to plan a simple melodrama silent piece of drama.

     

    Lesson 4: To rehearse their silent melodrama. To perform their silent melodrama. Activities - Warm-up Rehearse their silent melodrama Perform their melodrama to their peers.

     

    Lesson 5: To block their scripted melodrama for performance and assessment. To rehearse their script. Activities - Warm-up Students to be given a short melodrama script, start to rehearse, this will be for assessment next lesson. Homework to learn script.

     

    Lesson 6: To perform their scripted melodrama for assessment. Activities - Warm-up Performance of scenes to peers. Peer evaluation.
