Macbeth 'The 3 Witches'
This scheme of work and 6 lesson plans are designed to introduce students to Shakespeare as well as use new drama techniques to create performance.
The scheme encourages students to explore their imagination, concentrate on creating and presenting a character, as well as exploring the use of script, scenario, soundscape and stereotypes, all ending with a short performance from Macbeth.
Each lesson in this 6 lesson plan also includes a full break down of practical exercises and activities and links to creating a scene from Macbeth’s 3 witches, to aid students learning.
Full scheme of work
Lesson Objectives & Activities:
Lesson 1: To create a spontaneous tableau. To explore soundscape. To develop a soundscape. Activities - Warm-up Create a freeze frame as a witch (individually). Create a soundscape for a witches cave – explain this will form the introductory section of assessment.
Lesson 2: Rehearse their soundscape in a group. Perform their soundscape. To establish the characters in the text. Activities - Warm-up Create audience and performance space (audience in circle). All groups to perform in order selected by the teacher. Give students specific criteria to listen for, e.g. clarity of voice, effective range of sounds appropriate for a witches cave.
Lesson 3: To introduce script for assessment. Activities - Warm-up Refer to assessment criteria. Issue scripts and read as a class. Check understanding of unfamiliar words. Lines must be learnt and the rhythm should help do this. Refer to assessment criteria. Issue scripts and read as a class.
Lesson 4: To rehearse their script in three’s. To add soundscape to the beginning of a performance piece. Activities - Warm-up Rehearsal of script Individual groups perform to the teacher in the given performance space for feedback before assessment.
Lesson 5: To rehearse their script in three’s. To rehearse soundscape. Extension of Act 1 Scene 1 can be added if necessary. Activities - Warm-up. Rehearsal of script. Extension: Act 1 Scene 1 first meeting of the witches can be added on before the first script.
Lesson 6: To perform their section of script using characterisation. Activities - Warm-up. Short rehearsal of script and then performance of script to their peers for assessment and evaluation, teacher assessment.
